BEAST Event Recorder
The computer keyboard is an event recorder in which multiple keys can all be pressed and held down at the same time and the "press" and "release" times are recorded for each key. This gives a continuous time record of the behavior of interest to the observer.

In this example, event 8, "Door Open" has been selected as a Toggle Event (press key once to start, press again to turn off) and, since it is shown in red, you know that it is "ON". Shock, Bite and Head Down have been chosen to display counters. The constantly updating record to the left shows, for example, the event 25 (encoded by pressing the bracket "[") was last turned on at 16.9 sec and off at 17.0 sec. The counters show that there have been 6 Shocks, 5 Bites and 2 Head Downs. A total of 24 sec have elapsed since the start of the session. All of the on/off times for each event are recorded in a data file that can be edited to remove encoding errors.
